Google continues to improve interoperability between devices in its ecosystem. And among the new features he announced in 2024, there is an improvement in the Quick Share functionality, the equivalent of the iPhone’s AirDrop, for file sharing. Over the past few years, this sharing function has undergone numerous updates and in December, the firm announced an addition that makes it even easier to share photos, videos or documents between smartphones.
In fact, it becomes possible to send a file by generating a QR code which can be scanned by receiving devices. “Simply select the media file you want to share, tap the QR code and ask others to scan it for secure transfer. There’s no need to add them as a contact, check devices, or change your sharing settings”explained Google, in December.
And the good news is that according to our colleagues at 9to5Google, this new Android feature is finally being deployed on a large scale. Therefore, you may be able to take advantage of it today.
- When sending a file (or several), you will need to select the Quick Share option
- On the Quick Share page, you must then choose the QR code option
- The system generates a QR code which must be scanned by people who wish to receive your file
If the QR code option does not appear on your smartphone, you may still have to wait, as the functionality is still being deployed. You can also check if your smartphone already has the latest update available.
Unfortunately, this new sharing system only works between Android smartphones. It will not be possible to use these QR codes on an iPhone or Windows device. In any case, with this functionality Android becomes more practical, while riding on a technology that in recent years has become very familiar.
